When it comes to international trade, pallets are the first “gateway” your goods must pass through. Even though both are solid wood pallets, US-standard (GMA 48″×40″) and Euro-standard (EUR/EPAL 1200×800) pallets differ completely in dimensions, construction, and certification systems. Choose the wrong one, and you risk lower container utilization, higher freight costs, or worse – cargo rejection at destination and costly claims.
Below is a full breakdown of the basic parameters, core differences, and practical selection logic.
1. First, Get to Know the Two Pallet Types
| Decision Question | Selection Guideline |
| ① What is the destination of your goods? | To Europe → use Euro 1200×800; to North America → use US 48″×40″ |
| ② Does your client require exchangeable/returnable pallets? | Yes → must use EPAL-certified Euro pallets |
| ③ Are forklift operations frequent in the warehouse? | Yes → prefer 4-way entry (Euro or block-type US) |
| ④ Is your shipment volume large? | In a 40-ft container single layer: US holds about 20–21 pallets, Euro about 23–25. For regular large-volume shipments, Euro’s container-space advantage becomes significant. |
| ⑤ Do you need to recover pallet costs via the European pool system? | Yes → choose EPAL-certified Euro (higher unit cost but recyclable and resellable, more cost-effective in the long run) |
2. Three Core Differences That Directly Affect Your Shipments
(1)Certification logic: market-driven vs. standard-driven
The US GMA pallet is a “market-driven” standard. 48″×40″ is merely the de facto size used in North America – there is no mandatory certification. Quality is graded by condition (Grade A/B), and prices are relatively flexible.
The Euro pallet is “standard-driven.” Only pallets manufactured under EPAL production license, strictly following technical specifications and bearing the EPAL mark, qualify as genuine Euro pallets and can enter the European pallet exchange system. Counterfeit EPAL markings do appear on the market – fake marks can be refused entry or even destroyed in Europe. Always source from authorized manufacturers.
(2)Forklift entry: 2-way vs. 4-way
US pallets are mainly stringer type; the standard construction typically allows only 2-way entry (front and back). Euro pallets use a 9-block construction, allowing 4-way entry from all sides.
For warehouses with frequent forklift or pallet jack operations, or for automated storage systems, the flexibility of 4-way entry is a clear advantage – which is a key reason why European warehouses generally prefer Euro pallets.

(3)Circulation model: single-use vs. exchangeable
North America does not have a unified pallet exchange pool. US pallets are mostly single-use or go into recycling channels – suitable for “one-way” shipments.
Europe has a mature EPAL pallet pool system: certified Euro pallets can be exchanged, repaired, and recirculated along the supply chain. If your client’s supply chain involves multiple points within Europe, exchangeable EPAL pallets can save both parties considerable pallet costs.

3. Selection Decision: Five Questions to Guide You
| Khía cạnh | US GMA Pallet | Euro EUR/EPAL Pallet |
| Dimensions | 48″×40″ (1219×1016 mm) | 1200×800 mm |
| Height | Approx. 140 mm | 144 mm |
| Construction | Mainly stringer type (3 stringers); also block type | 9-block type (9 blocks + 3 stringer boards) |
| Forklift entry | Stringer type: usually 2-way; notched/block type: 4-way | Full 4-way entry |
| Deck board layout | Flexible, no mandatory standard | Standardized: 5 top boards + 3 bottom boards, total 11 boards, 78 nails |
| Self-weight | 16–32 kg | Approx. 25 kg |
| Dynamic / static load | Approx. 1270 kg / 2500 kg | 1500 kg / 4000 kg (bottom stack not exceeding 5500 kg) |
| Markings & certification | IPPC heat-treatment mark (ISPM15) | IPPC + EUR mark + EPAL license number |
| Circulation system | No unified pallet pool; mostly single-use or recycled | EPAL pallet pool; exchangeable and repairable in Europe |
4. Compliance Red Line
All solid wood pallets for export must undergo ISPM15 heat treatment (HT) or fumigation and bear the IPPC mark. Euro pallets additionally require both EPAL and EUR markings.
Missing markings can result in return or even destruction of the entire shipment – this is a hard requirement with no exceptions.
Summary
• Destination determines the direction: North America → US standard; Europe → Euro standard.
• If your client requires pallets to circulate within Europe and be exchangeable/returnable, you must use EPAL-certified Euro pallets.
• For one-way exports with no return requirement, either US or non-certified Euro pallets can be chosen flexibly based on cost.
